The Heat is On in St. Louis.

So I’m not gonna lie, my entire motivation for an overnight stop in St. Louis is entirely based on food. And my brother. See he has friends there and raves about it but now that I’ve been there I suspect it’s really because of the custard. And probably his friends. I have a few of those too so I get it. But this custard is where it’s at. We came to St. Louis for 2 things: Barbecue and Custard. And I will absolutely come back for this custard. But this BBQ? I’ve actually had better in New York City. And before you get all puffed up and ready to fight me about those words, just know that New York has amazing food from everywhere. It doesn’t mean that other cities don’t have The Best…whatever. It just means New York really has everything. If your local favorite has made it’s way to NYC consider your town on the map. I mean, the best burger I have EVER had is from a divey bar in DC, not New York, so it’s possible.

But let’s get back to custard. Ted Drewes is every bit as incredible as my brother claimed it was. If you know me at all you know that ice cream is my life blood. It is appropriate everyday, every way, and in every weather. Yes, I will eat ice cream in a blizzard. Which I have done. Several times. So after this less than stellar barbecue, we headed out for custard. I was actually nursing a pretty bad stomach ache, which has happened most of this trip, so I was a little worried about this ice cream adventure. So note to self: take your vitamins, Sarah, or you will miss out on heaven. Which is what Ted Drewes is. Steve actually won the ice cream award because he got scotch oatmeal cookie custard, while I got vanilla & peach puree. Sweet and fruity was perfect on a day when it was insanely hot. So hot, that I couldn’t do the flip test. Ted Drewes is so thick that when you flip it upside down it will not fall out. But since it already started melting once I had it in my hand I didn’t want to risk it. I was actually feeling really sick when we got to ice cream, probably due to the lack of nutrients in my diet. Note to self: when on a road trip and not working out or eating a normal diet (you know, not ice cream and gummy bears) take you calcium and B vitamins.

Remember when I said it was so hot? Well yeah, hot as balls. Ella was not feeling the heat, and was not impressed when we walked to the St. Louis Arch but would not let her get in the water. Which happened to be the dirty Mississippi River. We may be reckless but we are not irresponsible. Also I was not about to have our dog smell like gross river as we drove to Kansas. I’m a responsible adult. Despite the fact that it was so hot, and all three of us were literally melting into the ground, the arch is definitely an impressive sight. I was impressed. But I also am pleased by sugar and babies, so I’m an easy target.

Our quick respite in St. Louis was an adventure, one that made my ice cream heart bursting full of happiness. Which is something we needed because I knew that our next 87-hour drive through Kansas would be anything but happy.
