The Poconos While Camping with Friends

I’m sure that by now you get that we like camping. Even if our dog is not partial to it. Yet. We will change her. By now you’ve probably caught on that the theme of this trip is camping. Camping and drinking. I promise we also like cities and being inside. Which is probably hard to believe because we just left a major city and spent the past few weeks camping in the woods. But this time we have company so I swear it is different. It’s pretty hard to go camping in New York City, and it is definitely something that needs to be planned because most of our friends don’t have cars. Once we started embarking on this adventure we made plans with our best Philly friends to meet up in Central Pennsylvania for a weekend of camping. Despite the fact that it rained nearly the whole time, we had a blast. The dogs, not so much. We were camping in a region of Pennsylvania called The Poconos, which is this really gorgeous tree-infested vacation land. There are also lots of lakes and boats. But when it’s a rainy weekend, camping is where it’s at, obviously.

Now we have this dog, Ella, and she is basically the best. But she can also be a prissy bitch. She doesn’t really care for other dogs and is extremely possessive of things — toys and people — even if they aren’t hers. People are what she prefers, so imagine our surprise when she met Nigel, our friend’s awesome Chocolate Lab and a friendship was born. It’s like Nigel is the cool kid and Ella desperately wants to be a part of the cool club. I’ve never seen a dog try so hard to be loved. And it’s really not that hard.

Since the weather was not working in our favor our plan for hiking began in the morning before the rain attacked us and our dogs hate us. Our hike took place in the Delaware State Forest. But we were still in PA. Apparently Pennsylvania can’t think up new names for parks so they just reuse others. From states that don’t really have that much going for it. How generous of you, PA. Pennsylvania like to keep you on your toes, which was evidenced by the lack of markers on the trail we chose. And we had two dogs with us who like to lead the way. Straight into the water. Ella likes to chase everything that moves and Nigel was keeping up with our surprisingly active senior dog. A very successful puppy playdate.

And then the rain started. Steve like maps and I’ve never really looked at weather radars, because why look at pictures when you have numbers? Except the weather pictures are way more accurate. We thought we had escaped the storm only to have the skies open up and it begin pouring. But when you have board games and beer, is it ever really a bad day? It is to puppies who don’t like storms and hate being outside during them. It’s taken some work to get Ella adjusted to this camp life and she really hates the rain. We are the worst.

Ella was definitely a little bit sad to leave her best bud, and to be honest, so are we. But when you have friends that love camping as much as we do, it’s really just bye until the next camping adventure. And apparently the west cost has some pretty sweet camping adventures to be had. So we’ll just continue this friendship there. And Princeton Reunions. There will always be Reunions.

Our next few adventures will feature less camping, more drinking, and even more episodes of Ella being ridiculous.
